In the same way our research group is carrying out other research projects, the Acrophobia Project is expected to study the efficacy of the use of the New Technologies for the treatment of this psychological problem. Specifically, the main attention has been aimed to the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in the treatment of acrophobia. This technology has a variety of scenarios related to the fear of heights (a big wheel, a terrace, a high building) which allow a series of actions in order for both patient and therapist to work on the problem during the treatment sessions. Some of theses options will allow us to start the big wheel so the patient can find himself at different highs. In addition, the patient can move around a virtual scenario in the upper floor of very high buildings.
Again, these are situations that allow the patient to expose him/herself to situations which he/she would have otherwise avoided.
The results obtained so far show the utility of the use of these systems as the patients improve along the treatment. In addition to the use of VR for the treatment of fear to heights, in our group we have recently incorporated other innovative technologies. Specifically, we can talk about the use of Augmented Reality (AR) for the treatment of acrophobia.
Preliminary data have showed that it is possible to activate the anxiety of the patients and after the treatment, we have observed quite an improvement.
